Lasso guard
Lasso guard is a gi guard where the bottom player wraps one leg around the outside of the opponent's arm, placing the shin across the arm with the foot on the inside, while holding the same-side sleeve. The wrap is hard to break, which makes the lasso one of the most controlling guards in the gi. It works against standing and kneeling opponents and pairs with spider and De La Riva grips. The passer needs to clear the lasso by turning the arm out or stepping around before passing.

If you're on the bottom
- Wrap the leg deep around the arm with the sleeve grip on the same side
- Use the other foot on the hip or biceps to control distance
- Sweep toward the lasso side or take the back when the passer turns
If you're on top
- Break the sleeve grip on the lasso arm first
- Clear the lasso by rotating the elbow out or stepping around
- Pass away from the lasso side once it is gone
Key details
- The deeper the wrap, the harder it is to break
- Keep the lasso knee pointing out to keep the arm trapped
- Combine with a spider foot on the other biceps for full upper-body control
- As the passer, posture back and stay off your knees while clearing the wrap
Common mistakes
- A shallow lasso that slides off when the passer moves
- Holding the lasso without moving your hips to attack
- On top: forcing a pass while the lasso is still wrapped
