Collar sleeve

Collar sleeve is a gi guard where the bottom player grips the opponent's collar with one hand and the opposite sleeve with the other, with one foot on the biceps of the sleeve arm and the other on the hip or hooking a leg. The cross-body grips give strong control of the opponent's posture, which makes it a great guard for sweeps, triangles and omoplatas, and a good counter to standing passers. The top player has to break the collar grip, posture, and stop the sleeve arm being stretched before passing.

If you're on the bottom

  • Control posture with the collar grip and extend the sleeve arm with your foot
  • Off-balance the opponent toward the trapped arm and sweep
  • Attack triangles and omoplatas when the opponent pulls the arm back

If you're on top

  • Break the collar grip first
  • Posture up and keep the sleeve arm bent and close
  • Clear the foot from the biceps before you step around

Key details

  • Keep the foot on the biceps, not the forearm, so it can't slip off
  • The collar grip pulls the head down; the sleeve grip stretches the arm out
  • Change the free leg from hip to hook depending on how the opponent stands
  • As the passer, turn your wrist or step back to strip the sleeve grip

Common mistakes

  • Holding the grips with straight arms and no foot pressure
  • Pulling the collar without breaking the opponent's balance first
  • On top: ignoring the collar grip and trying to pass under it
