BJJ position
Mount
Mount is the position where the top player sits on the opponent's torso with a knee on each side. It is one of the most dominant positions in jiu-jitsu: the top player has gravity on their side and access to chokes and armlocks, while the bottom player can't strike back or easily create space. Holding mount takes balance more than strength. The bottom player escapes by protecting the arms and neck, then using a trap and roll or an elbow to knee escape to get back to guard.

If you're on the bottom
- Keep your elbows tight to your ribs and your hands protecting your neck
- Trap an arm and the foot on the same side, then bridge to roll the opponent
- Elbow to knee: shrimp out, recover half guard, then full guard
If you're on top
- Stay low and heavy first, with your knees tight to the opponent's armpits
- Climb to high mount when the arms come up, to set up armbars and chokes
- Keep your base wide and follow their bridge instead of resisting it with your arms
Key details
- Pressure comes from your hips, not from leaning on your hands
- Grapevining the legs in low mount slows down the bridge
- Their hands pushing your chest are an invitation to an armbar or arm triangle
- From the bottom, bridge first to create space, then move your hips
Common mistakes
- Posting your hands on the mat on top, which makes the trap and roll easy
- On the bottom: pushing with straight arms and giving up an armbar
- Bridging straight up instead of toward the trapped side
